Update to 8.4.51: automatic APS offline key retrieval

Adobe and the referencing companies got wind of this little script. So they circle through the keys faster than Paris Hilton through her shoes. ;)

Neisklar and 80ka80 wrote some nice scripts to retrieve the keys (thanks so far for the effort). I adopted and modified it and included it in this update.

APS support is still experimental and the key retrieval only works for one major (German) publisher but the keystones are set and I think it’s possible to transfer it to all other companies.

The script update has one disadvantage: If you got an APS pdf and they change the key afterwards you can’t decrypt it (the script always gets the newest key). As you’re using a library system anyway you can just redownload it use the script faster. Anyway that problem will be addressed later.

Thanks for the update. One thing I noticed today as I have not used this in a while and rebuilt my system in the process – this will NOT work with Adobe X! If you are getting an error message make sure you are running Adobe Reader 9.X or earlier. I downgraded and it works like a charm once again.

    • February 3, 2011 at 6:25 pm

It might work with Adobe X if you disable the ‘Protected Mode’ (nevertheless I haven’t tested it). Anyway the problem has been mentioned in the FAQs so if you get problems it’s at least partly your fault. ;9

    Hi,

Until few days ago I could decrypt my ebooks with ineptpdf 8.4.5.1 without any problems. Now it says: “Offlinekey cannot be decrypted, aborting (hint: redownload pdf)”. Of course I redownloaded the ebook again but it doesnt work. Interesting thing is that I can decrypt newspapers and magazines, just not books.
I am using Onleihe. I guess they have changed something, but wonder why I can decrypt newspapers. Do they have different keys?
    Hope someone can help me.

    best regards

    Tony

    Dear Tetrachrome:

Great work with the ineptpdf to “extend” borrowing period for EBooks borrowed from local library that are locked down with Adobe Livecycle. So easy that even I could get it to work!

    Thanks!

Here’s hoping that you stay one step ahead of their technology.

    Keep up the good work!

ineptpdf 8.4.5.1 doesn’t work on the ebooks from dawsonera.com. those ebooks are locked with Adobe Livecycle DRM.

I’m getting an error attempting to unlock a FileOpen locked PDF using ineptpdf8.4.51. The error reads “Error: ‘PDFDocument’ object has not attribute ‘decipher_rc4′.

    Thanks,

    Don

Most of my pdfs can be decrypted, but I’ve found a batch then get the above error as well? Any reason for this? Were you able to get these working?

      Thanks,

      Tony

I ran into a problem with Firefox 4.0.

The script could not open the cookie database.

I downgraded to 3.5 and it works fine now but I think this blew the cookie away.

How do I get access to the #$%^&*( PDF that was created with File-Open.

The cookies are in an sql file in your firefox/mozilla profile. you can browse it with an SQL file browser – no biggy.

I haven’t tested Firefox 4.0 so far so there may be a chance that they changed something.

    Maybe new Copyprotection?

First of all: Thanks @Tetrachroma for the great work.
Unfortunately there are some new eBooks which can not be correctly decrypted.
On german onleihe there are books authored by Pearson Education and published by Markt & Technik. With ineptpdf 8.4.51 they can de decrypted, but all pages except the page with the copyright notices are empty. The fact that the only readable page is the page with the copyright notices and its only on books from Pearson Education brings up the question if this is a new form of copy protection?

    • July 17, 2011 at 3:35 am

    V. 8.4.51 Stopped working – Does anybody has problems too with Library Books (PDF). After month of working without fail it stopped working for Books (PDF) about 2 Weeks ago – Newspapers (PDF) still work. The Error message is Offline key can not be encrypted. And i also see in the network monitor that it connects to edc.bibliothek-digital.de. Did they maybe change something on the encryption scheme again ?

An Update would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks a lot for your work so far.

Couponing will always contain a spot in the minds
of numerous homemakers. Printable Oakley coupons for example can be
used to buy a particular item in the actual store. Try to find out
stores where you can easily use these coupons.

    Settings
    RetVal=0&Error=Bad Request.

First time I’ve run into this. It created a failed decrypted copy once, now the debug output is all I get. The published of the document says you can only download the pdf twice. Do you supposed that goes for the script as well?
